Topic of this month: Yamas & Niyamas – five behaviors to avoid & five to engage

“For our growth, and to strengthen our lives, we need to follow some rules. These rules are called “Yama“(social ethics) and “Niyama” (personal ethics). They are the first two steps (or limbs) of yoga – of inner union.” — Sri Sri

During this session of Yoga Philosophy, let us know what the first 2 limbs of ‘8 limbs of Yga’ are as given in Patanjali Yoga Sutra and how we can incorporate them in our lifes to be great Yogis.

Yama or 5 rules for living peacefully in a society are –

  • Ahimasa (non Voilence);
  • Satya (Truth);
  • Asteya (Non-stealing);
  • Brahmacharya (Control);
  • Aparigraha (Non-accumulation.

Niyamas or 5 rules for inner peace and development are:

  • Soucha (Cleanliness);
  • Samtosha (Happiness or contentment);
  • Tapas (Auterity);
  • Swadhya (Self-study) &
  • Eswarpranidhana (Surrender).

Duration: 90 Mins each Session – Full series is 8 sessions

When: once every Month on 3rd or 4th  Friday of the Month

  • 20 Mins – Meditation
  • 50 Mins – Interactive sessions on the Yoga Philosophy

Learning Outcome: Gives Yoga Practitioners and Yoga teachers a foundation on Yoga Philosophy and how this can be used to make own life wholesome. Know the true meaning and purpose of yoga and provides practical guidelines for achieving the goal of yoga, i.e., controlling the mind.

Patanjali Yogasutras – Guidelines for holistic living

The art and science of yoga is all about creating union between body, mind and spirit. Its aim is to help the practitioner in using the breath and body to nurture an awareness of ourselves as individual beings closely connected to the entire cosmos.  In short it is about creating balance and equanimity so as to live in peace, good health and harmony with ourselves and with everything, living or non living, around us. This art of right living was practiced in India thousands of years ago and the foundations of yoga philosophy were written down in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, approximately 200 AD.  This sacred text describes the inner workings of the mind and provides a blueprint for controlling its restlessness so as to enjoying lasting peace. The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are 196  sutras (aphorisms), believed to be complied by Saint Patanjali, and hence the name Yoga Sutras of patanjali or Pātañjalayogaśāstra.

Learning Outcome from this Series of workshop: Know what is Yoga and how it should be practiced; Know the purpose of our practice and the benefits we will gain from the practice. As per Patanjali Yoga Sutra, foundational text on Yoga, the purpose of Yoga is to over suffering – free from physical pain and metal disturbance.

Faculty : Jaya Harikumar

Jaya Harikumar is an ERYT 200 Yoga teacher with almost 10 years of teaching Yoga. She is also Art of living Faculty and a Metaphysical consult with a Masters in Metaphysics and pursuing doctorate in Metaphysics in Vaastu Shastra and Feng Shui field. Her research topic for Master’s thesis was on Patanjali Yoga Sutra ‘ Mind and its modulations’ and was well accepted and appreciated by the University.

In this series of workshop on yoga Philosophy, we will be discussing the essence and core ideas of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the foundational text of yoga. Jaya will teach from Sri Sri Ravishankar’s commentary of Patanjali Yoga Sutras. No prior knowledge is needed except curiosity to learn and an open mind to deepen your understanding of yoga!
